“The Battle with Mr. Covey”

In the passage “The Battle with Mr. Covey” it is just what the title is there is nothing else to it that the main focus. It tells us about the f=fight between a slave and a Master. It also takes us back to slavery time and shows us the ways that the slaves ware traded and how did could not do nothing to defend them selves. It also give us an example of the methods that they would use to beat the slaves. For instance in one we read that they would work them form sun up till sun down Mondays throw Saturday. Even the longest days ware short and the short night ware to long this is telling us that if Mr. Covey could he would work them day and night.

To make matter worse if you ware dyeing he would not give you a break or let you have that day off he would just kick you and told you to get back to work. As shown is this passage told by a slave. “Around three o'clock of that day, he slave broke down of strength falling he was seized with a violent aching of the head, attended with extreme dizziness; he trembled in every limb the slave master Mr. Covey was at the house, about one hundred yards from the treading- yard where the slaves were fanning. On hearing the fan stop, he left immediately, and came to the spot where the slaves were. He hastily enquired what the matter was. Bill (one of the slaves) answered that another slave was sick, and there was no one to bring wheat to the fan. The sick slave had by this time crawled away under the side of the post and rail- fence by which the yard was enclosed, hoping that he would found relief by getting out of the sun. Then the salve master asked where was the sick slave was. Bill told him by one of the hands. He came to the spot, and after looking at sick slave awhile, asked him what the matter was. He responded as well as he could, for he hardly had strength to speak. He then gave the slave a savage kick in the side, and told him to get up. He tried to do so, but fell back in the attempt. He gave me another kick, and again told the slave to rise. He then again tried, and succeeded in gaining own his feet but, stopping to get the tub with which he was feeding the fan, he again staggered and fell. While down in this situation, Mr. Covey took up the hickory slat with which Hughes had been striking off the half- bushel measure, and with it gave the slave a heavy blow upon the head, making a large wound, and the blood ran freely; and with this, again told me to get up. This is an example that they gave in the passage that show how bad the salve owner ware and they did not care for the sake of one they just wanted to gets his money worth of him because he new that he was not going to come bake the fallowing year.”

Also another way that this shows Realism because they give sow much details in how he was running in to the woods and giving us sow much detail that it gave us a clear image of what was the slave went throw this is what the passage said (after the slave gets beaten and run off into the wood he past, through bogs and briers, barefooted and bareheaded, tearing his feet sometimes at nearly every step he took and after a journey of about seven miles, occupying some five hours to perform it the guy got to his master to tell him what Ms Covey was doing but all he got was a go back and best luck because you are his for the rest of the year.) This show how now one would care if a slave was kill or not.

The social issue is showing us how bad slavery that one should be respected no matter there skin color. They are humans and they have to take a rest sow that they can work. It all so show us that if one person see that one is taking advantage of its power they should put a stop to it because they would not like to be treated that way.

Dark Romanticism

Original Sin is when you ware judge sins you ware born and that God hated you for who you ware and that no matter what you do you will be consider a sin.
The Transcendentalist felt that every one had a chance to prove them selves and show that they ware part of god and that god had given then the chance to solve problems.

1 From the way I feel is that I consider my self as a Transcendentalist. Some of the reasons are because I got to chose to not be a sin person and by not hanging dogs for dome reasons of witch craft because I don’t believe in that stuff and for shore that I would not kill a man. To me that just what people do that are close minded and don’t see that all people are different and they all ware given the chance of God to express them self the way that they want to.

In the work of Edgar Allan Poe in the story “the Mask of the Red Death” seem that this Mr. Allan had all this money and the fortune of being what they ware that they thought that nothing could happen that they had there life paid for and in other words that never thought that at there own celebration they would see death in the eye. Another is the way that he had the chambers decorated and the size of the chamber all so that there was seven rooms and that seven is and odd. By being a odd number is an negative energy and all of the bad things happen in the seven.
The main thing that stood to me was the ebony clock. This image stood in my head as if the clock was letting them know that every hour that pass the Red Death was getting closer and that every hour that pass the chiming of the clock was longer with more insanity and nervures because every thing got quiet even the musicians would stop playing in a moment of silent every thing would go throw there minds as time pass know one would expect the uninvited guest.

The Transcendentalist believe that the voice of God was in the head of one and by that in the Dark Romantic think that there is no way
way that nature can be good since that they see nature in a negative way as a dark nature that is way in there writings they would use negative picture or dark pictures and dark colors nothing would be bright. As in the passage of the "The Masque of Red Death” they use a dark red color and there was no source of light only the one of the fire and that at 12 at night is like the darkness time of the night. They also use dark images like Satan, devils, and ghost. The total opposite of Transcendental because they would use nature as to related to them self.

5
In the poem The Raven Mr. Edgar Allan wrote he had a black bird that flew in to his chamber door and was tapping and rapping on it. When he finally had the courage to open the door there was no one. By then the tapping and rapping had move to the window and the did not know who it was sow he thought that it was wind. When he open the window to see the raven flew in. When he found out who it was he started to have a conversation with the raven he started to ask him for his name like if the raven would answer him he ask the raven to just live him because he thought that the raven was bringing him bad news.
The words that stood out more to me were “Never More, Rapping and Tapping, Raven, chamber door. These words stood out to me because he uses them in almost stanza. The tapping and rapping meant that some one or some thing was at the door or window. He use them sow repeatedly as if he was nervous and could not stop thinking of the tapping and rapping. The other word that he uses is Never More and similar to phrases at the end of stanzas he would give a second and then would go back to the poem this to me is like some thing that he uses to grab your attention as to pull you back into the poem.
In Transcendentalism they focus more in the goodness of people and the God would speak to them and in The Raven Mr. Edgar though that the his story would have to be like a bad omen because he uses the night to show the darkness and a black bird to be consider a diabolic creature.

Nature

By reading the writing of Nature by Emerson I was inspirer to the idea of being open minded to the way nature works. Form the way the nature has everything in a order form from a seed becoming a pant to that plant becoming a tree to that tree dying and become the fertilizer of the ground by this showing me how the world cycles and how it need to be there birth for it to be death in this way you can see that no matter how big a tree it can be it will died one day.

In the passage they said “The stars awaken a certain reverence, because thought always present, they are always inaccessible.” When they are talking about this it shows how we all ways get impress every time that we see a star its like if it was the first time that we seen one. And how even sins though we have been studding the stars we still look up and wonder if they are there. In one way it shows us that we are berry nosy in some way that we all ways ask our self why who where and how.

From Self-Reliance

In passage done by Waldo Emerson it says “Trust thyself. Every heart vibrates to that iron string. Accept the place the divine Providence has found for you; the society of your contemporaries, the connection of events. Great men have always done so and confided themselves childlike to the genius of their age, betraying their perception that the absolutely trustworthy was seated at their heart, working through their hands, predominating in all their being.”

In this passage I feel if it is saying that every man should trust them self’s in making their own decisions because your first guest is always right and that your heart will guide you in the right direction. To me this is not some thing new this I usually what every men talks to his son in that point of life telling them that you walk the road of life and if you would trip you would just have to stand up and keep going and to always keep on the right path.

Resistance to Civil Government

In this passage the part that mostly stood out to me is when Mr. Henry David Thoreau is talking about the soldiers. The reason that this got my attention is because I wanted to be in the Marines when I was in my freshmen year in high school. I had already had an interview with the some Marine representative and sins I was already taking JROTC for three semesters and all I needed was to be 18 years old. But as time past I notice how the U.S. was getting a negative opinion of the Latin community it all started after September 11 they treating Latinos as if they we ware the Terries when all we have done is come to a country to find a better way of life. Even though so many Latin Americans had join the army and ware in Iraq an back home there families ware being invited by Immigration on was being token out of there jobs just because of breaking a minor law the law of passing to another country with out the permission of the country is the same as the one of one driving with out a seat belt on.
Sow imagine how the soldiers felt when they found out that there families were being separated and that they could not do nothing about is that they ware like shadows in there human body’s that they were just killing machines.

This is an example of Transcendentalism because it shows sow many ways in one it show the immigrant the come to work hard in this country, another is the way the soldiers are and how they feel.

2In the romantic time people’s writing was base in Nature for example in this story we read and heard Mr. Rip Van Winkle spend most of his time in a mountain smoking his pipe.
In a way that they talk about romantic is when they are talking about when he feel asleep in a tree for the longest time ever and then woke up one morning and everything had change his house was not there and his dog was really old.
3 In the poem Thanatopsis it’s directed to lower classes. Its trying to tell them to not be afraid of death, that it something that’s going to happen to every one from king to nobles to lower class people and to the forest are going to end in the ground when they died. There would not be no exception.
Thanatopsis main focus was nature its romantic because its keeps talking about nature
4 In the poem Ropewalk it talking about a guy falling asleep watching the spider spin. He describes the things that he sees in his dream from two women swinging to seeing men with stern faces and seeing men sailing in the fog hoping to find land. The images that stood out more was a man in a room by himself staring at the cracked door as light passes through.
This poem shows is romantic because it describes the man’s dreams by using imagination and nature. In nature he describes the spiders spinning their webs
5 I chose this picture because it shows how it can be nice one minute and harsh the next. This picture is romantic because this ship in nature it depicts normal people. It also usage romantic colors because there is a contrast between the light colors and the dark colors.

Rationalism

1) Two views of God reflected in Johnathan Edwards' and Ben Franklin

The contrast between the Puritan spirit and the spirit of Rationalism can be fairly represented in the different conceptions of the deity found in the writings of the preacher Johnathan Edwards and the widely talented Ben Franklin. Puritans like Edwards believed in a very personal God, one who knew and judged and would punish severely the wickedness of a humanity that was born in sin. It was the proper duty of us all, Edwards believed, to obey without question the will of God as revealed in the bible. On the other hand a Rationalist like Franklin believed that God’s purposes were to be understood by use of the human reason, particularly as guided by scientific laws and truths.

In today’s world, a woman’s right to abortion would be opposed by Puritans as being contrary to God’s teaching; it would be in line with the thinking of Rationalism to allow a woman to follow her own reasonable thinking in this matter.

3) Franklin’s Rationalism can be seen in his description of his attempts at moral perfection. He realizes the difficulties in achieving perfection, but he goes about it systematically and reasonably. First he lists from his reading those qualities that are generally consider to be virtues ( temperance, industry, humility, etc.) then Franklin provides for each virtue some major practical ways by which each virtue can be made into a habit in his life. For instance, under the virtue “Silence,” Franklin provides the “precept” “Speak not but what my benefit others or yourself; avoid trifling conversation.”

4) My list of thirteen virtues
Determination
Courage
Honesty
Dependability
Loyalty
Respect
Obedience
Thoughtfulness
Generosity
Patience
Tolerance
Open-mindedness
Modesty

No I don’t think list of virtues are enough to produce moral perfection. Two other necessary things are guidance and example of others. Our actions depend upon not just a list of general qualities but also, I think, upon the help we get from others in pointing the right way an in serving as a model for the kind of person that we would like to become.

Total Depravity or Organic sin

Total Depravity or Organic sin

In this passage of The Puritans I understood that all people ware meant to go to hell. Only the chosen ones would be safe but still God would have you over the fire of hell and you would never know when one day you would wake up to notice you are Know in the fire pit. In the small clip we saw they usage many forms to expressions to explain why sow many people are sin. One of them is the apple of Adam and Eve.

The puritans believe that every one was borne sinner and that there was no way that some one could earn Gods grease. Every one was going to go to hell and only the ones that Jesus decided to die for are the ones that ware going to be save and that the rest no matter what they do they ware going to burn in the blazing fire of hell. You never knew when you were going to be in Hell because you are only being held by the hand of God. God could decide any moment to drop you in to hell sins he is the one that hold you over Hells fire.

You would drop sow into the fire sins you would be as heavy as led that there would not be nothing that would stop you from falling into hell. Nothing that you have done in life would help you or save you from the gates of hell. God looks at us as we look a serpent. He thinks that we are abonation and that his anger at us make him think that why he hold us up from the pit of hell.

This all happen because Adam and Eve eat the apple and every one after that was consider to be in sin and there was no way they could fix that. Because God had given everything to Adam and Eve and the only rule he had told them it was broken. That rule was not to eat the apple. After that he send Jesus to save some people and the only ones that ware going to be save ware the ones that ware call the voice of God. This people would priest and spread the word of God. This persons would make thing there way and if some one would disagree with them they would kill them and tell the people that God had told them to do so.

the puritans belifs

The puritans beliefs

The puritans’ belief was that all humans ware going to go to hell. Because they ware decadence from Adam and Eva and they disobeyed God. Sow by that they are saying that no matter what the humans would do to go to haven he would go to hell. Only God would chose some of the humans that would go to haven. Those persons ware call the profits and they would go around telling the world that they ware the voice of god and what ever they do was ok because God had told him to do sow.
